Travel essentials: insurance, eSIM and airport transfers
Three small decisions that make a big difference when something goes wrong, or when you simply land tired at midnight.
Travel insurance
Good travel insurance covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation, cancellation and lost belongings. It matters most far from home and on adventurous trips. When comparing policies, check:
- Medical and evacuation limits, including helicopter rescue if you are trekking.
- Activities and altitude: many policies exclude trekking above a set altitude or certain sports. For Himalayan treks, check the maximum altitude covered.
- Pre-existing conditions and how they must be declared.
- Cancellation reasons that are covered, and the excess you pay on each claim.
- Whether you already have cover through a credit card or home insurance (in Sweden, many home insurance policies include some travel cover for a limited number of days).
Online travel insurance sold per day of travel, with optional sports and activity cover.

eSIM: mobile data when you land
An eSIM is a digital SIM you install on your phone before departure. It gives you local or regional data without hunting for a SIM shop at the airport, and you keep your home number for calls and texts on your physical SIM.
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your carrier.
- Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch it on when you land.
- Compare data amount and validity with how long you will stay; regional plans can be good value for multi-country trips.
- Coverage in remote mountain areas can be limited whatever SIM you use.
eSIM data plans for 200+ countries and regions, installed from an app before you fly.

A pre-booked transfer means a driver waiting with your name, a fixed price and no negotiating after a long flight. It is especially useful for late arrivals, families and first visits to a city.
- Give your flight number so the driver can track delays.
- Check luggage allowance and waiting time included.
- Compare with official airport taxis, trains or ride-hailing for your arrival time.
Pre-booked airport and city transfers at a fixed price, from economy cars to minibuses.
