Overview
Thailand works well for almost any kind of trip: a city break in Bangkok, a beach holiday, island hopping, trekking and elephant sanctuaries in the north, or a long overland journey through the region. Tourism infrastructure is mature, domestic flights and overnight trains are plentiful, and accommodation ranges from simple bungalows to world-class resorts.
Best time to go
The cool, dry season from roughly November to February is the most popular time for Bangkok, the north and the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi). March to May is hot. The southwest monsoon brings rain to the Andaman side from about May to October, while the Gulf islands (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) follow a different pattern, with their wettest months usually in October to December. Choose the coast by the month.
Top places in Thailand
Bangkok
Grand palaces and riverside temples, canal boats, night markets and one of the world's great street-food scenes.
Chiang Mai and the north
An old walled city full of temples, mountain day trips, cooking schools and ethical animal sanctuaries; Chiang Rai and Pai are nearby.
Phuket and Phang Nga Bay
The biggest island, with lively and quiet beaches and boat trips among limestone towers.
Krabi and the Andaman islands
Ao Nang, Railay's cliffs, and ferries to Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and beyond.
Koh Samui and the Gulf islands
Resort-style Samui, festival-famous Koh Phangan and dive-focused Koh Tao.
Ayutthaya and Sukhothai
Ruined royal capitals, both UNESCO sites, easy as a day or overnight trip.
Getting there
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi is the main long-haul gateway, with Don Mueang handling many low-cost flights. Phuket also receives international flights. From Europe compare direct flights with one-stop options via the Gulf or Istanbul; from Bangkok, domestic flights to the islands and the north are frequent and often inexpensive.

Visa & entry
Many passports, including those of EU countries, can visit Thailand visa-free for a short tourist stay, but the permitted length has changed several times in recent years. Check the current rules for your passport before you book. Since 1 May 2025 all foreign nationals must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within three days before arrival; the Tourism Ministry warns of fake TDAC sites that charge a fee. Use only the official site.

Budget tips
- Eat where locals eat: markets and food courts serve excellent meals for a fraction of hotel prices.
- Use Bangkok's BTS Skytrain, MRT and river boats instead of taxis stuck in traffic.
- On the islands, book ferries and transfers directly or through your hotel rather than at the pier in a hurry.
- Shoulder months (early November, March) can offer good weather with lower room rates than peak December–January.
Before you go
- Travel insurance.
- An eSIM for mobile data from the moment you land.
- A pre-booked airport transfer for a late arrival.
- Car rental and hotel search.
