There are no nonstop flights from Stockholm, or anywhere in the Nordics, to Kathmandu. Every trip to Nepal involves at least one connection, which is good news for your wallet: several airlines compete on the route, and a little planning makes a real difference to the price.

The usual ways to get there

Most travellers from Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) reach Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) with one stop, through one of these hubs:

Total travel time is typically somewhere between 13 and 20 hours, depending on the layover. Routes and schedules change, so always compare the current options rather than assuming last year's best connection still exists.

When fares are highest

Nepal's two main trekking seasons, October–November and March–May, are when flights and mountain lodges fill up first. October also brings Nepal's biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar, when many Nepalis abroad fly home, so seats on popular connections can get scarce and expensive. If you want October, book early.

When fares are often lower

The monsoon months, roughly June to September, are usually quieter and can be cheaper, though trekking views are often hidden by cloud and some mountain roads are affected by landslides. December to February is cold at altitude but clear, and works well for Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and lower treks.

Five ways to pay less

  1. Compare a whole week of dates. Shifting departure by a day or two often changes the fare more than switching airlines.
  2. Look beyond Arlanda. Copenhagen, Oslo or Helsinki sometimes have cheaper connections. Add up the cost and time of getting there before you decide.
  3. Check the total with baggage. Trekking gear is heavy. A fare that includes a checked bag can beat a cheaper one that does not.
  4. Be careful with separate tickets. Combining a cheap flight to a hub with a separate ticket onward can save money, but if the first flight is late you usually lose the second. Leave a long buffer, or book one ticket through.
  5. Set a fare alert early. For autumn trips, start watching prices in spring and book when the fare reaches a level you are happy with.

Layover tips

Long layovers in Doha, Dubai or Istanbul can be pleasant with lounges or a short city visit, but check whether you need a transit visa for your nationality if you plan to leave the airport. Very short connections are risky on the last leg into Kathmandu, where weather and airport congestion can cause delays.

Arriving in Kathmandu

Tribhuvan airport is about 6 km from Thamel, the main area for travellers. Expect queues at immigration in peak season and check the current visa rules for your passport before you fly; our Nepal travel guide links to the official sources. A pre-booked transfer and an eSIM make a late arrival much easier, and if you plan to trek, check that your travel insurance covers the altitude you will reach.
