Thamel, Kathmandu's traveller district, is only about 6 km from Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM): around 20 minutes early in the morning and up to an hour in afternoon traffic. It is a short ride, but it is where many first-time visitors overpay, because they land tired, without rupees and without a working phone. Here are your options, with typical prices checked October 2026. None of these fares is officially published, so treat them as approximate ranges.
The quick answer
- Easiest: the prepaid taxi counter in the arrivals hall, roughly NPR 700–1,200 to Thamel depending on the time of day and the car.
- Cheapest by car: a ride app (Pathao, inDrive or Uber), often around NPR 350–800, but you need mobile data and must meet the driver on the road outside the terminal.
- Calmest after a long-haul flight: a hotel pickup or a pre-booked transfer, with someone holding your name outside.
Option 1: the prepaid taxi counter
After baggage and customs, look for the prepaid taxi desk inside the arrivals hall, before the exit. You name your hotel or area, pay a fixed fare and receive a voucher or receipt; outside, a marshal points you to the car and you hand the slip to the driver. Recent 2026 guides put the fare to Thamel at roughly NPR 700–1,200, with more for late-night arrivals or air conditioning.
- Pros: no haggling, no meter arguments, works for every arriving flight.
- Cons: a little more than a well-negotiated street fare or an app ride.
- Tip: pay in rupees if you can. The counter may accept dollars, but at its own exchange rate.
Option 2: Pathao, inDrive or Uber
Ride-hailing apps are usually the cheapest way into town by car. Pathao and inDrive are the apps most locals use; inDrive lets you propose a price that drivers accept or counter. Uber officially launched in Nepal on 5 June 2026 with car (Uber Go, Uber Comfort) and motorbike options in the Kathmandu Valley, so your existing account from home may work.
Two catches. First, app drivers generally don't pick up at the terminal door, because the airport runs its own taxi system: walk out past the car park to the main road, then book and tell the driver where you are standing. Second, you need data. Buy a tourist SIM at the airport or install an eSIM before you land. Keep cash too, since many drivers prefer it.
Option 3: hotel pickup or a pre-booked transfer
Many Thamel hotels and guesthouses will collect you if you email your flight number, either free or for a modest fee (2026 guides quote anything from free to about USD 25). For a midnight arrival, a family trip or your first time in Asia, it is worth it: you walk out to a name board and a fixed price. You can also pre-book an airport transfer online with a partner, and when you compare hotels in Kathmandu, check whether the airport pickup is included.
Option 4: the local bus
Local buses and microbuses run along the main road outside the airport, not from the terminal itself, and cost around NPR 20–50. They stop near Ratna Park or Jamal, leaving a walk of 1 to 1.5 km into Thamel. It is fine in daylight with a small bag; skip it at night, with a big trekking pack or after a long-haul flight, when the saving is only a few hundred rupees.
Scams and annoyances to avoid
- "Your hotel is closed or full": a commission trick. Insist on the address you booked, or take another car.
- Touts in the car park quoting two or three times the prepaid fare. Either use the counter inside or agree a price firmly before you get in.
- Large notes: have small notes ready. A driver who "has no change" for NPR 1,000 at midnight is a negotiation you don't want.
- Unofficial helpers who grab your trolley and then ask for a tip. A polite, firm "no thank you" works.
Your first hour, in the right order
- Clear immigration with your visa on arrival or eVisa.
- Collect your bag, then withdraw or change a small amount of money: enough for the ride, dinner and the next day. Rates in town are usually better.
- Buy a SIM at the operator counters in arrivals if you want to use an app, or switch on your eSIM.
- Choose your ride.
Going back to the airport
The return trip is usually cheaper, because you are no longer a captive customer: a negotiated taxi or an app ride from Thamel normally costs less than the prepaid fare in. Leave plenty of time, because traffic near the Ring Road and Sinamangal can be slow. Domestic flights (to Pokhara or Lukla) use the domestic terminal, a short walk of about 500 m from the international terminal.
